..might not sound like a menu for a gala Inauguration Ball to you but it sounds just fine to 178, first through fifth grade students at McColl Elementary School. They will hold their very own Inaugural Ball from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 20, at the school and those are the selections on which they will dine.

Inauguration Day will begin with the students watching the swearing in of President Elect, Barack Obama and Vice President Elect, Joseph Biden on television. There’s sure to be some discussion about the event after it is over. The day will end at their ‘glamorous’ Inaugural affair with the students dressed in their Sunday-go-to-meeting best or semi-formal wear. The evening will be filled with music provided by parents and students, dancing, and keepsake photographs. To really make the evening special, the entire wait staff will be made up of parent volunteers.

The Ball will be a fitting end to months of lessons about the election process, civics, constitutional rights and the democratic process. On October 13, the students participated in a mock election at the school. The Wayne County Department of Elections supported the project by supplying ten voting booths, ballots and a computerized counter. Obama won, 148 to 30. The students not only voted for presidential and vice presidential candidates, for the first time they voted for their school leaders by electing representatives to their Student Government Association. Overall, the election was a huge success. Many students commented that it was a very easy process and that they would encourage their parents to vote.
From lessons about politics to the mock election to their Inaugural Ball, McColl students have taken a personal parallel trip through a history making event that is sure to leave a positive impression.
