Detroit Board of Education President Carla D. Scott, M.D., and Detroit Public Schools Acting Superintendent Teresa N. Gueyser, Esq. this afternoon issued the following statement:

“While we have some concerns about the events and the accelerated timeframe that preceded this hearing, we believe today’s hearing with State Superintendent of Public Instruction Michael Flanagan was conducted in what appeared to be an appropriate manner. The protest that was placed on the record by the district reflected a legitimate process to protect the rights of the school district under the consent agreement.

The Detroit Public Schools has made no deliberate attempts to fail to comply with the Consent Agreement between the Detroit Public School District and the State Financial Management Review Team. On every occasion the deadlines and reporting requirements have been substantially met.

We believe Mr. Flanagan appeared to be fair in his conduct at today’s hearing, and we await his impartial adjudication. We would welcome the opportunity to answer any further questions that may arise on his part.”
