On Thursday October 30th, 2008 at 9:30am students at Stephens Elementary will receive a warm gift from area retailers: A free coat! The free coats are a gift from the Keeping Kids Warm program which is sponsored by Charming Shops, Inc. Their representatives will be on hand at Stephens to provide students with this essential seasonal item some students would otherwise go without. Detroit Public Schools and Charming Shops, Inc.; which includes Lane Bryant, Fashion Bug, and Catherines, know the importance of students having a coat to keep them warm as they travel to and from school during the winter months.

All Stephens’ students will receive a coat that was almost made just for them. That’s because for weeks, Stephen’s Elementary staff has been busy making sure parents fill out forms so there will be enough sizes available for students to ensure a good fit. This is the first year the school is holding the event, and Stephens principal Deborah Sinclair is pleased with all the positive feedback the school is receiving. Keeping Kids Warm volunteers will pack and present the coats to Stephens students in person. They will also assist students in picking out their very own coat!

In operation since 1996, Keeping Kids Warm has “provided nearly 90,000 new winter coats to elementary school students in need” across the country. Schools are either chosen by research done by Charming Shops, Inc. or by being nominated. Stephens Elementary was nominated for this gift by a former DPS student.
