Carla D. Scott, M.D., President, Detroit Board of Education and Connie K. Calloway, Ph.D., General Superintendent, Detroit Public Schools, this afternoon issued the following joint statement:

“We welcome Superintendent Flanagan’s action and see it in the best interest of Detroit school children. We know, from our productive and collegial dialogue yesterday, that the Michigan Department of Education recognizes the efforts throughout this past year that the Detroit Board of Education, the General Superintendent and the administration have made with regard to the herculean task of responding to the financial issues the school district faces. From that discussion we also have a fuller understanding of the responsibilities that their department has under state law. We have every trust in the fact that the State Superintendent is addressing these challenges through the lens of ‘How can we turn this around together?’ In that regard we view this as a strengthening of a partnership. We look forward to this process being successfully completed as quickly and as thoroughly as is possible.”

Detroit Board of Education Members who attended the September 16, 2008 meeting in Lansing with Michigan Department of Education officials were: President Carla D. Scott, M.D. and Members Annie Carter, Terry Catchings, Otis Mathis III and Marvis Cofield.
