Mayor’s Time and Detroit Public Schools are hosting the Annual After-School / Back-to-School Enrollment Fair on Saturday, August 16th, from 10 am until 2 pm on Belle Isle near the Lighthouse (at the eastern end of the island). Over 5,000 children and families are expected to attend the event which will be the official kick-off of the new school year. At last year’s fair over 20,000 vacancies in after-school programs were filled.
The event will be free to the public and will feature enrollment options for Detroit Public Schools, over 100 after-school program providers and tons of family entertainment. The Detroit Fire Fighters Association will be preparing and serving free lunches to all registered attendees and the Detroit Public Library bookmobile, videogame mobile, carnival games and inflatables will help to make sure that every child has a great time!
In addition to the fun and games, several organizations will be on hand to give parents one-stop shopping for all of their needs. The Department of Health and Wellness Promotions will provide free child immunizations and screenings! University of Detroit Dental School will be distributing information about dental screenings and several other organizations will be providing free back-to-school giveaways. Mayor’s Time will also be giving away Ipods and other prizes for registering and filling out parent and child surveys.
Studies show that after-school programs contribute significantly to overall development and education of our children. Yet, parents have indicated that they are unaware of the after-school programs available in their neighborhoods.
The Annual After-School / Back-to-School Enrollment Fair is one significant way to increase parental awareness of a wide variety of programs for children and youth.
