Teachers and other education professionals from the 34 school districts in Wayne County were recently honored at the Celebration of Excellence in Education event hosted by Wayne RESA.

The Detroit Public Schools honorees were selected for outstanding commitment to their profession and for improving the achievement of their students. Leadership is also an important factor as is creativity, and sound teaching ability. They are:

Teacher of the Year:
Phyllis Carmen Williams – Northwest Early Childhood Center
Kathryn Meloche – Clippert Academy/Science
Todd Losie – Renaissance High School/French

Rookie Teacher of the Year:
Camille Burden – Logan Elementary

Ancillary Professional Staff Member of the Year:
Gail Nawrock – Carstens Elementary/Social Worker

Wayne RESA Leadership Award:
Toni Hartke – Early Childhood Education

Each year, all county school Districts are asked to submit their choices for the elementary, middle and high school Teacher of the Year Award. The districts are also encouraged to submit nominees for Staff, Rookie Teacher, and Ancillary Professional of the year.

The awarding process was begun in 1986 by Post-Newsweek and WDIV/Ch. 4. In 2002, with assistance from the Ford Motor Company, Wayne RESA took over the awards program to continue recognizing those outstanding persons who have such a great impact on children and our future.
