The Westside Alternative Academy Panthers boys’ basketball team ripped their way through their opponents and brought their school and the District a third state basketball championship. They own the title, State Class “A” Alternative High School Basketball Championships for the school year 2007-2008. The team defeated the Ferndale Alternative High School by a score of 53 to 48 in the championship game played in Grand Rapids.

Westside is the ONLY State Class “A” Alternative High School Basketball Champions in the history of the district. This latest title is even more of an amazing feat because the school’s boys’ basketball program is only in its fifth year.

Much of the credit for the win goes to William Tanks, a scholar athlete who led the team in offensive and defensive rebounding; Corey Howard and Darius Lewis who led in overall scoring, each averaging sixteen points per game during the play-offs; and sophomore Daryl Burrell who won the prestigious Most Valuable Player Award for his contribution and effort in the championship playoffs and for his leadership and positive sportsmanship attitude throughout the season.

The team is coached by Attendance Agent/Head Coach Joseph Yelder and Assistant Coach Tommy Carter.

West Side Academy is the district’s model for a four-day school week
and a unique curriculum that accelerates class work so
students can graduate in just two years instead of four.
