Renaissance High School and the Detroit Public Schools District lead the state in the number of National Achievement Scholarship winners. Four winners are from Renaissance and one is from Cass Technical High School. The students are Phillip M. Bauman, Constance-Marie C. James, Sharron A. Seaton and Chinedum K Umazhi from Renaissance, and Paul Darnell from Cass. Each received $2,500.
More than 140,000 students nationwide entered the competition but only 800 actually qualified for a stipend. In the 44 year history of the program nearly 28,000 students have received scholarships worth a total of almost $91 million.
The National Achievement Program is privately financed by 40 corporate organizations and professional associations and by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. It was created to honor scholastically talented Black American students.
