April is the Month of the Young Child and throughout the Detroit Public Schools District, the focus is on the youngest learners. Community-based and general Open Houses have been scheduled so parents with children aged 5 or younger can visit, learn about DPS early childhood programs and services, and meet the staff.
Community Based Open Houses will be held at:

-Paul Robeson Early Childhood Center – 14900 Parkside – Thursday, April 17 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.
-Beard Early Childhood Center – 840 Waterman – Tuesday, April 22 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
-Heilmann Park Elementary – 15510 E. State Fair – Tuesday, April 29 from noon to 4 p.m.

The General Open House will take place at the Detroit Public Schools Welcome Center inside the New Center Building at 3011 W. Grand Blvd. (faces the Fisher Bldg.) on Tuesday, April 15 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Along with the Open Houses, art and photos of the pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students will be on display in the Fisher Building lobby throughout the month of April. Students will also show off their performing talents in the Fisher lobby on April 16, 23 and 30 between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m.

Exposure to an exceptional education program is strongly recommended in early childhood. Studies have shown that children who are involved in a high-quality preschool program reap clear benefits which include being:

-Less likely to need public assistance as adults
-More likely to become good readers (the foundation for learning)
-Less likely to need special education assistance or to be held back a grade
-More likely to graduate from high school and to at least attend college
-Less likely to be arrested or imprisoned
