The Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association (MSBOA) All-State Band program is one of the most prestigious instrumental performance programs in the state. Recently, Jared Laws a 16 year old 11th grader at the Detroit School of Arts, and Destiny Norwood, a 13 year old 8th grader at Brenda M. Scott Middle School, auditioned in the second annual MSBOA competition and won seats in the band programs for 2008.

Destiny has played the French Horn for 3 years and the trumpet for only six months, but it was her trumpeting skills that earned her seat #10 (out of 12) in the horn section of the All-State Middle School Concert Band. Jared was selected as principal chair in the high school band for his exceptional skills on the oboe. That seat is reserved for the best performer in the woodwinds section. He has played for five years and belongs to the DSA Wind Symphony, the Detroit Symphony Wind Ensemble and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra Philharmonia Orchestra. The latter two are special programs for students. Both Destiny and Jared are honor roll students. Destiny would like to become a pediatrician and Jared wants to become a professional musician.

Nearly 2,000 Michigan student musicians submitted a CD recording of their playing. Only the best performances that contained the required material made it past the first cut. The judges, MSBOA Association officers, were not given the names of students or where their home town. They only received a numbered CD to play to make their selections. This very strict audition process teaches youngsters early on that music, like any other profession, can be fun but that it also has standards that must be met in order to be successful.

Fewer than 100 youngsters were chosen for the band this year which makes Destiny and Jared’s selection even more of an honor. Participation will bring them in contact with other talented young musicians from around the state and they’ll have the opportunity to work with world renowned directors and instructors.
