NBA Stars Pitch in to Boost Academics and Share Basketball Skills with Southwest Detroit Students

Detroit, MI (July 5, 2002) – The Boynton Pre K-8 School will be hosting a four-day basketball camp beginning Monday, July 8, 2002. What’s unique about the camp is the fact that it has an academic component to it and will feature a number of National Basketball Association (NBA) stars. The camp is for students in grades 5-8 and is being sponsored by former University of Michigan basketball standout and former NBA star, Antoine Joubert, who attended Boyton and Southwestern High School.
Joubert grew up in southwest Detroit and views this as an opportunity to give inspiration and motivation to the youth. Joubert said of his efforts, “Many of us can see the end of our playing days coming and this is a nice way to show our appreciation for the support we received when we were growing up.” Joubert currently plays professional basketball in Europe.
Joining Joubert in the camp will be Perry Watson, former coach of Southwestern High School and currently coach and Athletic Director of the University of Detroit-Mercy men’s basketball team. The camp will also feature Jaylen Rose of the Chicago Bulls (a former “Fabulous Five” U. M. teammate with Joubert), Howard Isley of the New York Knicks, Voshard Leonard of the Denver Nuggets and Bill Jones, a former NBA Player.
The camp is limited to 80 participants and has a participation fee of $20.00 per student. The priority of the camp is its one-hour of academic tutoring in reading skills. The camp will run through July 12, 2002 with proceeds being donated to the Boynton Pre-K – 8 Learning Community. Media coverage is welcome and encouraged.
