Member
Detroit Public Schools Board of Education
District 7

Juvette Hawkins-Williams is an experienced entrepreneur, advocate, volunteer, mentor, community organizer, lifelong learner, and an independent impassioned early childhood educator with over 20 years experience working with young children and their families.  For ten years, she has owned and operated a state licensed child development and learning center in Detroit.  She is a graduate of Southeastern High, a Detroit Public School and, a graduate of Central Michigan University.  Mrs. Williams obtained her Michigan Teacher Certification in 2004 by taking and passing the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) Basic Skills, Early Childhood Education, and Elementary Education.  Currently she is applying for a predoctoral fellowship award in Social Transformation and Development.

Still in its advocacy stages, she is founder of E.M.B.R.A.C.E. acronym for Every Moment Bears Respect and Accountability for our Children’s Enhancement- a non-profit *501(C)( 3) organization founded/established in 2007 solely for the purpose of promoting respect for diversity, inclusion and reducing or eliminating prejudice against our community’s youngest citizens.  Healthy Child Development is her passion.  She is convinced from fieldwork, research, and life experiences that, adequately equipped to achieve change, and cope with real life challenges are the most important aspects in a person’s life.  Children develop and enhance strong learning foundations in a number of settings including their homes.  Sustainable communities and education are essential to growth and development.  Through education, the mind is shaped and through this shaping process, perceptions are made; perceptions not only of one’s self but also of the community.

Mrs. Williams enjoys reading, and doing independent research.  It is not unusual if on a particular day, or even week, you find her reading or with journal and pen in hand.  With regards to information, it is temporary and modifiable.  In this work, she seeks to debunk the myths of the Detroit Public School System.  Her desired outcome for DPS is an informed, involved citizenry with the social and scientific literacy, commitment, and creative problem-solving skills to engage in responsible individual and cooperative actions toward a sustainable society.

Quote By Juvette Hawkins-Williams:

“Education is like the air, it’s free flowing- not confined, and you can take in as much of it as you please anytime.”
