As a district, we cannot stress enough to parents and students the importance of good attendance, which means being in school regularly and being prepared to learn in every single class.
To fully support our mission of providing the highest quality public education available to the students of Detroit, we have implemented a new Attendance Policy for the 2013-2014 School Year.
Please know that having your children in school on time, every day and all day will make a big difference in their achievement.
DPS Student Attendance Policy
It is the policy of the District that every student should be in school on time each day unless such tardy or absence is excused in accordance with the Attendance Policy.
Purpose of the new Attendance Policy:
- Standardized and consistent district-wide policy for better enforcement
- Increased Accountability among Students, Parents, Staff and Support Agencies
- Addresses changes in Michigan Compulsory Attendance Laws and Department of Human Services (DHS) policies affecting family aid eligibility standards
Some of the key changes include a New 3-6-9 Approach.
- Upon three (3) unexcused absences, a phone call will be made to the homeroom and to the student’s home.
- Upon the occurrence of a sixth (6th) unexcused absence in the school year, the student shall be referred to an Attendance Agent for intervention strategies.
- Any DPS student having more than nine (9) unexcused absences per school year will face a Truancy referral to the Attendance Department.
- The case will then be processed and forwarded to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
- Three (3) instances of tardiness, of more than 15 minutes after the start of class, is the equivalent of one unexcused absence.

To encourage the continuance of this culture, we offer: relaxed dress days; acknowledge overall attendance averages during announcements; and garner a great deal of support from parents.
In the rare event that a student is experiencing attendance challenges, our teachers and clerical team members are very diligent as it relates to following up with parents and the attendance agent where necessary.”

HOW DID THEY DO IT?
Now, a few words from second-place Top Attendance School Clippert Academy…
Clippert Academy has been very successful in getting students to school because of our school culture and climate. We provide a nurturing, safe environment where students enjoy coming to school, and the staff is welcoming. Parents feel comfortable dropping off students here because they know they will be safe. The teachers are very aware of who is in their classes. If someone is present in English in the morning, but misses afternoon math, the teacher will alert the office so that we can locate that student.
Our bilingual staff stays in contact with parents by phone. We also work closely with our parent group and the attendance agent when issues arise. Because of the high expectations we have for students, no one wants to miss a class. Our teachers do their best to make their classes a place where students want to be. We have a variety of activities that engage students on many levels and success is always celebrated. Students and staff know that good attendance is necessary for high achievement and we work together every day to ensure success.

HOW DID THEY DO IT?
This month, we hear from Cass Tech…
Cass Tech is a city-wide college preparatory examination high school that offers advanced academic, scientific, and artistic studies for students with the ability and potential to meet the scholastically-demanding challenge at the next level. We are delighted that with a population of 2,300 students, our student attendance rate is one of the best in Detroit Public Schools.
We attribute this to our enthusiastic faculty who build strong relationships with students and provide an exciting and rigorous learning environment of sustained educational excellence. Rich in tradition, we continue to strive for excellence and are pleased to announce we have been approved for an International Baccalaureate (IB) Program. Cass Tech is also ranked by the Michigan Department of Education as the No. 1 High School in Detroit Public Schools. Because of this, our students desire to be an intricate part of the Cass Tech educational experience every day. There is something for every student here. We not only offer curriculum pathways, but we also offer extracurricular activities, after school tutorial sessions, over 60 clubs and organizations, and Saturday School to ensure all of our students are successful and become well-rounded, high-achieving students who are able to compete globally.
Our nurturing and active Cass Tech parents are a vital part of why our students are in attendance daily. Parents are encouraged to be actively involved here at Cass Tech and are always welcome. Our parents have a Parent Room located in the administration suite where they can come in and work with the faculty and administration to continue to provide a clean, safe and healthy environment.
Our dynamic attendance department reaches out to our parents and students, and communicates with them in various ways such as via email, phone calls and home visits. They also work closely with faculty to ensure all students are in attendance daily.
Via collaborative processes among all stakeholders, Cass Tech will continue to provide a model of sustained educational excellence, and this begins with students attending school every day.

HOW DID THEY DO IT?
Renaissance High School prides itself on providing an academically rich and culturally diverse environment that prepares students for the world of work and post secondary endeavors.
An enthusiastic and nurturing faculty, concerned and involved parents and a rigorous and challenging academic school culture contributed to positive student attendance for the opening weeks of school. The newly-adopted teacher selection process allowed Renaissance High School to select a faculty who is not only competent in their subject matter but also builds a relationship that sustains student interest. Parents stated at the conclusion of Parent Night that the school embodied a warm and welcoming spirit. They were excited about the synergy that pervaded the classroom visits, and they were also looking forward to a productive school year. Our students are intrinsically motivated and aspire to maintain the school’s tradition of academic excellence.
Our faculty, our parents and our students working together have woven a fabric on which high student attendance rests.
The Renaissance community has stirred a fire from which the Phoenix rises on the wings of attendance.
–Renaissance Principal Anita Williams
