Mission Statement

The Detroit Public Schools Office of Alumni Affairs celebrates alumni contributions to the broader community and works to involve them in the ongoing progress of DPS. The office encourages the formation of alumni groups affiliated with each Detroit Public School, coordinates with alumni involved in community, cultural, educational and professional development of the students of their alma maters and regularly recognizes the exemplary efforts of contributing alumni groups and individuals, while promoting a positive image of the Detroit Public Schools.

Giving Back & Reaching Out

Alumni Association members unite with school staff, parents, and community and business leaders to meet the needs of students through financial support, mentoring, and volunteerism. Alumni support provides students with opportunities for scholarships, internships, school supplies, field trips, and apprenticeships. Alumni encourage students to become productive members of our local community,

Alumni members play a vital role in establishing and supporting student enrichment programs within their alma maters and beyond. The range of ways alumni can contribute is wide and varied. Membership in the Alumni organization can assist in the growth of local school programs, including tutoring.

Alumni membership enhances educational and professional opportunities for students. Members are involved in community, cultural, educational and professional development of the students of their alma maters. Diana Ross (Cass and Commerce High Schools), Aretha Franklin (Northern and Commerce), Gerald Ford, Henry Ford, Rosa Parks, Mayor Coleman Young (Eastern and Miller), Art Van Elslander (Denby), Elijah McCoy, “Bo” Schembechler Jr. and other famous Detroiters – or more accurately, their likenesses – again will be recruiting new members for the Detroit Public Schools Alumni Association.
Thanks to a loan from the Parade Company, the Big Head likenesses of 11 famous Detroiters will be in front of the Spirit of Detroit Statue, at the corner of Jefferson and Woodward, soliciting memberships from passersby Wednesday, March 30 from 4-6 p.m. The heads are among those seen every year in America’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

To bolster membership in the new Detroit Public Schools Alumni Association, DPS is challenging every graduate to support their school by purchasing an association membership by Friday December 31, 2010. The school with the highest number of alumni signing up during the contest period will receive a special celebrity visit in the new year.

The DPS Alumni Association will provide enrichment for DPS students, while working with existing school alumni associations to benefit students. Regular membership costs $25 annually, and will include the I’m In keychain card, which will carry discounts to various retailers.

The group will work closely with the Detroit Public Schools Foundation, a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to supporting Detroit students. Their mission is to raise, manage and steward funds and other resources to support value-added programs and activities for the benefit of the Detroit Public Schools and its students.
