We’ll be treated to a special performance from the students in Trix Academy’s choir! As always breakfast and lunch will be provided for all attendees.

Please be sure to have representation from your board, and extend an invitation to people who might be potential members of your board.

5th Annual Charter School Boards of Directors Conference

The Detroit Public Schools Community District invites directors from its charter school boards to take part in the Annual Charter School Boards of Directors Conference, a day of learning and discussion about the future of our charter schools. The day will be packed with compelling educational sessions led by charter school board experts, with offerings for both new board members (appointed within the last 12 months) and seasoned board veterans.

We have a great lineup of sessions, including:​

  • Public Relations, Programming and Partnerships: Making Power Plays for Education
  • Got Data? Now What? Using Academic Data to Inform Governance Decisions

The goal of the Charter School Boards of Directors Conference is to prepare board members for those changes and equip them with the tools and information necessary to be successful.

A day of training and exchange of ideas

Charter school board members are entrusted with ensuring that each child is provided with an effective educational program and taxpayer dollars are being properly spent. The goal of the Charter School Boards of Directors Conference is to leave you energized, informed and better equipped to handle the challenges that come with your important role.

Daniel Varner, CEO of Excellent Schools Detroit and member of the Michigan Board of Education, will be the keynote speaker. Other speakers include Mark Eitrem of the Michigan Department of Education PSA Office and DPS board liaisons Vanessa Gulley, Carolyn Faulkner and Alma Hollins.

Lunch will be provided, and parking will be free. This event is free to board members and prospective board members of Detroit Public Schools-authorized academies. Free background checks will be available for new board members.

Non-DPS Charter School Board Members Welcome!
Members of charter public school boards that are not authorized by Detroit Public Schools are invited to take part in this day of training.

Registration for non-DPS board members will be $30 per person. Tickets can be purchased via credit card at the door.
