ASD School Social Workers

In 2004, when it became apparent that the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) population was significantly increasing across the country, the DPS Office of School Social Work Services responded to this challenge by selecting a team of School Social Workers who were experienced, knowledgeable and committed to the charge of promoting further understanding of the disability. This specialized team of people is responsible for ongoing development and implementation of training initiatives to service the ASD population. The team’s focus is to enhance diagnostic skills and the implementation of treatment interventions.

The ASD School Social Workers provide the following services related to Autism Spectrum Disorders:

  • Coaching/Support of Staff in the areas of:
    • Conducting comprehensive evaluations (CARS-2 & ADOS) and helpful hints for writing reports
    • REED/MET/IEPT process
    • Treatment strategies-utilizing creative activities
    • Parent outreach
  • Parent Liaison:
    • Conducting workshops
    • Community outreach
    • Bi-annual newsletter
  • Professional Development:
    • In-service training
    • Resource development (coordination of resources)
    • Promoting ASD awareness

To date, over 400 professionals have been empowered to provide the highest quality of services in the areas of assessment, early diagnosis, and best practices in treatment interventions.
