Bilingual Teacher Program
In an effort to address the Detroit Public Schools' urgent need for bilingual teachers, non-certified staff who are bilingual, are trained for teacher certification at the elementary and secondary level. To accomplish this, a partnership has been established with the Wayne State University College of Education.
The potential bilingual teachers will serve the largest represented communities, i.e. Arabic, Bengali, Chaldean, Hmong, Romanian, and Spanish speaking, and as English as a Second Language teachers to other language minority students. The long-range goals is that the students serviced by the staff of the Office of Bilingual Education will also seek bilingual education as a career goal in Detroit.
