Adult Education

AdultEdNewFlyer2014_15_JanLOAt Adult Education our mission is to strengthen our community by eliminating adult illiteracy and improving client skills for successful long-term employment. Detroit Public Schools’ Adult Education programs offer High School Completion (HSC), General Educational Development (GED), Adult Basic Education/Pre-GED (ABE), and English as a Second Language (ESL) at several community sites and schools, including two main Adult Education campuses, throughout Detroit.

We provide free classes for more than 1,200 adult learners 18+, giving them the opportunity to upgrade their academic skills, complete high school, obtain a General Educational Development (GED) and other services. We also provide opportunities at two Detroit Learning Labs for students to receive GED preparation.

GED Preparation

After more than 10 years of service at our current location, the GED Testing Center is excited to announce that we have moved, just one block north to 1641 Porter Street, Detroit, Michigan 48216. The new location is in the same building complex, still centrally located and accessible via the same bus lines as the current location.

GED (General Education Development) offers adults a second chance to complete their high school education. The GED can open doors to many other opportunities such as employment, technical school, and college.

The official GED exam consists of five sub-tests. Coursework to prepare for the GED includes math, writing, social studies, science and literature. Computer-based academic instruction is available at most sites.

Official GED Practice Test

The official GED Practice Test is offered to determine readiness to take an Official GED Test. Adults who pass the Official Practice GED Test are eligible for a free waiver to waive the cost of the GED test.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESL)

ESL is designed for adults who do not speak English as their native language. Interactive, small-group, large-group, and computer-based instructional activities are offered to emphasize skills in reading, writing and conversational English.

Students also will learn about American culture and traditions. Citizenship preparation is provided as needed.

High School Completion (HSC)

image copy 4Students earn Carnegie units in a traditional high school setting that is accelerated and allows for faster credit recovery and attainment.

Each learner develops an individual plan to complete the appropriate completion credential that includes employability skill development in oral communication, resume development, college application development, and other activities that makes the college/career transition smoother.

High School Completion courses are offered at the Westside and Eastside Adult Education campuses.
